Profile

After completing my Chiropractic training in 2002 I worked part time in a clinic in the cotswolds. During this time I became increasingly interested in the role of exercise in the management of painful conditions. Myself I had battled with recurrent back pain since teenage years, which was helped by Chiropractic but still felt uncontrolled and I was wary of certain movements. I discovered Pilates in 2003 and trained with Stott Pilates for the matwork exercises in 2005. After a while teaching I felt in need of something more and decided to embark on the Studio Pilates training using the large pieces of equipment. I had been made aware of Suzanne Scott and the Pilates Foundation which offers the highest standard of training available in this country. Since making this decision I have never looked back. The Pilates equipment opens up a whole variety of new challenges to the body both at low and high levels of ability. Learning with Suzanne has been both insprirational and informative, encouraging you adapt the Pilates repertoire to relate to the person you are teaching and think outside the box. This has resulted in my focussing much more on rehabilitation incorporating the clinical knowledge I gained in Chiropractic. This year I have opted to be 'non-practicing' on the GCC chiropractic register to allow me the time and funds to complete further training in Pilates with the Foundation and Exercise Rehabilitation with the Kinetic Control Organisation .

I am fascinated by how the body moves and how it adapts movement as a result of pain or postural habit. Recently I have become interested in the practice of mindfulness and am currently attending the 8 week mindfullness meditation course. This has influenced the way in which I teach inviting people to move mindfully noticing how their body feels and exploring new pathways of movement.

While interested in achieving a pain free balance in the body I also enjoy the interaction and social aspect of teaching small group classes. It is encouraging to see people gain control of their movement initially through improved body awareness and then by development of strength and mobility; even more so when they are able to manage or be free from pain.

Historically I was involved in plenty of sport: at junior level represented the county in athletics and England on the hockey pitch. These days I run cross country with the dog to escape the children! and on a quieter level have become a great follower and believer in mindful meditiation.
