Class Descriptions

Mixed Ability

Most of my classes cater for a mixed ability teaching mostly low load exercises (but also some more demanding ones ) and focussing on postural control of movement aiming to improve strength, coordination and flexibilty. Strong emphasis on body awareness learning not only the movement but also how much effort to put into it.

Low load exercises are effective for most people: current thinking suggests that it may be a weakness in the deep postural muscles and an inability to stabilise the spine at low load which contributes to back pain in the general population and recurrent injury in sportspeople.

Many people find Pilates a great way of keeping themselves moving comfortably so they can continue an active lifestyle.

Pilates for Sports

This class is orientated towards the needs of a sportsperson. It will include a mixture of low and high load exercises and thus require more general strength than needed in the mixed ability classes. The aim will be to reduce any uncontrolled movement in the body which would predispose to injury or result in decrease in performance or power. The Pilates method provides a way of achieving this through a combination of core stability and muscle flexibility work. As you learn more about how your body moves you will be able to stabilise your movement better and reduce bracing patterns which create tension in the body.

Pilates for Back care

These are a new series of classes designed for people who suffer recurrent or chronic back problems, more information will be posted soon.
